Tensions between Britain and Russia have intensified after the UK announced that information on British technology used in long-range missiles could be shared with Ukraine. The decision was announced as Prime Minister Andy Burnham arrived in Kyiv for his first foreign visit, where he reaffirmed Britain’s continued support for Ukraine.
The Kremlin reacted strongly, accusing Britain of becoming directly involved in the war. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Britain was “participating in this war” on Ukraine’s side and accused the UK of undermining efforts toward peace. He also warned that Russian forces were seeking to identify sites involved in the production of missiles and other military equipment.
The technology involved relates to British components used in the French SCALP missile, which is closely related to the British-French Storm Shadow system. The agreement could allow Ukraine to produce versions of the long-range weapon domestically, potentially strengthening its ability to conduct strikes against targets deep inside Russian territory.
Burnham defended Britain’s position, rejecting Russian threats and saying the UK would continue supporting Ukraine. During his visit to Kyiv, he also paid tribute to Ukrainian soldiers and met with President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Relations between Moscow and London have already deteriorated significantly during the war, with diplomatic tensions continuing to rise. Russia’s latest warning adds another layer of concern as Western countries debate how far military support for Ukraine should go while efforts to achieve a negotiated peace remain under pressure.
