Trump says Karoline Leavitt will leave White House press secretary role, become outside advisor

President Donald Trump has announced that White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt will leave her position at the end of August, stepping away from one of the administration’s most visible roles while continuing to serve as an outside adviser.

Leavitt said the decision was deeply personal, explaining that the demands of the press secretary job had become difficult to balance with raising her two young children. She described her time in the role as an “honor and adventure of a lifetime” and thanked Trump for giving her the opportunity to represent his administration from the White House briefing room.

In a statement shared on X, Leavitt said that becoming a mother again while working in one of the most demanding public-facing positions had been both rewarding and challenging. She ultimately concluded that she could not give her children the time and attention she wanted while continuing in the role.

Trump, meanwhile, said Leavitt would remain a top outside adviser and an influential voice within the Republican Party, suggesting that her departure from the White House does not mark the end of her political involvement.

Leavitt has served as Trump's press secretary for roughly a year and a half, regularly defending the administration during White House briefings and becoming a prominent figure among Republican supporters.

Her departure will now leave the administration searching for a new person to take over the high-profile communications role.
