Jon and Emilie James, 36 and 37, made a bold life change in 2022, selling their home for £132,000 to purchase a derelict three-acre caravan park in Llanelli, Wales, for £90,000, moving in mortgage-free with just £500 left in savings.
The site had sat abandoned for more than 30 years before the couple, along with their dog Maggie, took on the challenge of restoring it into a fully off-grid campsite. Living conditions during the early stages were far from comfortable: the pair spent months in a 25-year-old caravan equipped with only an outdoor shower and a camping toilet, going without hot water for two months while managing extensive renovations themselves.
Despite the challenges, Jon and Emilie pressed on, determined to bring the neglected land back to life. Their vision includes sustainable, self-sufficient features such as a wood-fired sauna, reflecting their broader goal of creating a peaceful, nature-focused retreat for future visitors.
The project has been a true labor of love, requiring the couple to learn new skills, take on physical labor most people would shy away from, and adapt to a much simpler way of living. What started as a leap of faith has slowly transformed into a tangible dream taking shape acre by acre.
