A California man was sentenced to just one year in county jail after admitting to having sex with his own teenage daughter — a case that ended in her death and has since sparked public outrage over what many are calling a deeply inadequate punishment.
Stephen Vincent Chavez, 41, pleaded guilty in May to incest and providing alcohol to a minor. His sentencing this week came after a plea agreement was submitted directly to Ventura County Superior Court Judge Dusty Kawai, bypassing the district attorney's own recommendation of three years in state prison — the maximum allowed under California law for felony incest.
According to prosecutors, Chavez plied his 18-year-old daughter Makayla Settles with alcohol after a family gathering in July 2025, just two days after she had moved into his home. He then had sex with her. Makayla died by suicide in December 2025, five months after the assault.
Judge Kawai said he could not legally impose the maximum sentence because Chavez had no prior criminal record.
Prosecutors had explored rape charges, but said the available evidence wasn't enough to move forward without Makayla being there to testify. Her family has pushed back hard on that decision.
"Despite clear evidence — including a rape kit, a police statement, and a recorded interview at a safe house — we were told none of it could be used because Makayla is no longer here to speak for herself," her relatives wrote in a GoFundMe set up to fund a civil lawsuit. "This has left us feeling helpless and heartbroken, but we refuse to let her story end without a fight."
Chavez will serve his one-year sentence in county jail, followed by three years of probation.
Makayla's family says they are now raising funds to hire a civil attorney to pursue justice on her behalf — and to make sure what happened to her doesn't happen to someone else.
