Most people line all eight 8s up and add them straight across. They get 64 and wonder where they went wrong. The trick is that nobody said you have to use each 8 as a single digit.
Solution:
The answer is 888 + 88 + 8 + 8 + 8.
Check it yourself. 888 plus 88 equals 976. Add 8 and you get 984. Add another 8 and you hit 992. One last 8 and you land exactly on 1,000.
