How Books Are Turning Into the Latest Fashion Statements for Gen Z

Books are no longer staying inside backpacks — they are now appearing on the outside as fashion accessories. A growing trend among Generation Z consumers is transforming books into visible style items, especially through miniature book charms attached to handbags. This shift reflects South Korea’s rising “text-hip” movement, in which reading and writing are increasingly seen as stylish ways to express identity and personal taste. According to reporting by The Korea Herald, books are becoming symbolic objects that represent individuality rather than just sources of information.

The trend recently gained global attention after Coach introduced book-themed bag charms as part of its spring/summer 2026 “Explore Your Story” campaign. The brand described these miniature books as readable objects inspired by renewed interest in long-form storytelling at a time when many people feel overwhelmed by fast-paced digital content. Among the 12 miniature titles released in the collection were two Korean works: Welcome to the Hyunam‑dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo‑reum and Honmono by Sung Hae‑na. The charms reportedly sold out quickly in North America and were expected to expand to wider markets afterward.

Within South Korea, publishers and design companies are also responding to the trend by producing charm-sized collectible book editions. One example is the miniature book project “Mountain 239” created by the design company OIMU, which received a bronze medal at the Best Book Design From All Over the World competition in Germany. These small-format books show how publishing is adapting to younger audiences who see books not only as reading material but also as objects of lifestyle design.

Industry data further supports this shift. According to a recent report from South Korea’s Culture Ministry cited by The Korea Herald, people in their 20s were the only age group showing an increase in reading rates, even as overall adult readership declined. The growing popularity of book charms reflects this change in attitude toward reading especially among younger consumers who are turning books into tools of self-expression as well as fashion statements.
