Avalanche DERAILS Swiss Train Carrying 80 Passengers as Casualties Feared

A passenger train was seen getting derailed in the Swiss Alps, being struck by a major avalanche near Goppenstein in the Valais canton.

The train was believed to be traveling along the Frutigen Brig route with more than 30 passengers when this incident arose at about 7 am local time.

Emergency services, including the mountain rescue teams, ambulances, and a helicopter, were swiftly dispatched to the scene when this arose.

All passengers were safely evacuated, and at least five people were said to have been injured. One of them was transported to a nearby hospital in Sion, while four more were said to have been given first aid at the scene.

Authorities shared how they feel the derailment arose when an avalanche crossed the tracks shortly before the train's passage.

The region had been under a high avalanche warning due to recent heavy snowfall and unstable snow conditions. This highlighted the dangers faced in Alpine areas during the winter season.
