Desperate Hunt for 10 Missing Skiers After Huge Avalanche At Popular US Resort

A powerful avalanche was seen striking Castle Peak near Truckee, California.

The incident took place northwest of Lake Tahoe on Tuesday. Sources from local media outlets confirmed how the severe winter storm arose and brought with it intense snow, high winds, and very dangerous conditions to the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

The slide reportedly hit a group of backcountry skiers on a guided trip, sending deep snow down a slope at about 11:30 am local time.

The group included skiers and guides on the last day of a multi-day tour. Emergency crews responded after the avalanche was reported, locating six skiers alive who were ordered to shelter in place.

Meanwhile, rescuers worked hard to reach them through blizzard conditions. As of the latest updates, nine to ten skiers remain missing and continue to be searched for by dozens of first responders, including specialized ski rescue teams.
