Julia Simon Wins Gold in Olympic Biathlon After She Was Temporarily Banned for Stealing Thousands from Teammate

French biathlete Julia Simon has captured the Gold medal in the women's 15 km individual biathlon event at this year's Winter Olympics.

This marks her second gold of these games after previously assisting France win the mixed relay. Her individual victory is seen as a major personal achievement and a comeback to many people.

Simon's road to the Olympic gold was clouded by a widely reported scandal from late 2025.

In October, she was found guilty of theft and credit card fraud for repeatedly using a teammate's and a staff member's bank cards without permission to make online purchases that totaled up to a few thousand Euros. She got a three-month-long suspended prison sentence for this and was also fined.

The French Ski Federation ended up imposing a mega six-month-long ban from the competition on her. However, five months were suspended, allowing her to return to the competition in time for this year's Olympic event.
