Dense fog causes 59-car pileup on Highway 99 in huge chain reaction crash

A huge multi-vehicle crash featuring 59 cars took place during the early hours of the weekend on Highway 99 in Tulare County, California, after dense fog sharply reduced visibility along the busy Central Valley corridor.

Around 8:15 am, drivers were seen encountering a thick fog that limited visibility to a great extent to nearly 100 to 200 feet. This created a very dangerous condition where cars could not see slowing or stopped vehicles ahead of them.

As a result of this, a series of chain reaction collisions unfolded on both the northbound and southbound lanes, ultimately involving dozens of cars, trucks, and also tractors, and trailers.

Emergency responders from the California Highway Patrol and several fire and rescue agencies worked for hours to secure the scene, treat those injured, and also clear the wreckage.
