The plane was outlined to be a turboprop ATR 42-500 that was operated by Indonesia Air Transport and chartered by the nation's Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry. It lost contact with air traffic control around 1:30 pm local time while it was en route from Yogyakarta to Makassar.

Rescue teams found sections of the plane, including parts of the fuselage, tail, and a window as well. These were all scattered around the fog-shrouded slopes of Mount Bulusaraung in the Maros region on Sunday morning.

The mountainous terrain and heavy mist have made the entire process of rescue and recovery a difficult one. Strong winds and low visibility were also said to be making the matter more complicated for the operation to occur. Authorities did confirm added more rescue groups to try to expand the search operations.
