Trump’s proposed Greenland deal may give US control of land around military bases

President Trump recently shared a new diplomatic initiative that is centered on Greenland during the World Economic Forum in Davos, signaling a major geopolitical shift in the Arctic policy.

Under this plan, the US aims to secure strategic advantages on the island by getting full control over limited portions of land present around existing military installations. Instead of the outright purchasing or annexing of Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, the proposed framework would designate certain sites, especially around US military bases, as sovereign areas where American forces could operate independently.

This arrangement is similar to how the UK controls all of its bases in Cyprus. The proposal to acquire Greenland and the firm stance of Denmark and Greenlandic authorities is raising eyebrows. As they feel that they maintain the island and it's not for sale. Trump recently ruled out publicly the use of military forces to attain the territory, instead of emphasizing diplomacy and national security interests.
