France train crash RECAP: Driver dead and dozens injured in high-speed collision

A French high-speed train ended up crashing into a truck at a crossing in northern France on Tuesday.

The tragedy resulted in the death of the driver and also left two others critically injured, as per officials. The accident occurred between the towns of Bethune and Lens in the northern French region of Pas de Calais at about 7 am, as mentioned by the rail operator.

Two more people were said to be in critical condition, while 11 others sustained less serious injuries.

Officials had reported in the past that 27 people were injured. First responders were seen examining the mangled nose of the TGV train, according to images that were shared on X.

As per the spokesperson for the prefecture, the truck was carrying military equipment. The lorry driver was in police custody as per judicial sources.

Meanwhile, transport minister Philippe Tabarot shared on X how he was heading to the scene with the head of SNCF. Neither the latter nor the prefecture was able to give details of the circumstances linked to the accident as investigations continue.
