YouTube and Meta Must Pay $3M for Negligence After Girl Got Addicted to Social Media, Jury Finds in Landmark Verdict

A jury in Los Angeles has found YouTube and Meta liable for negligence in a landmark suit that was brought about by a young woman who said their wildly popular apps were very harmful and addictive for her while she was growing up.

The verdict could herald a new legal array of consequences for tech titans such as YouTube, which is owned by Google, and Meta, which have both long been protected from liability for the content that they host.

Silicon Valley firms have strongly pushed back on any debates of being involved in causing harm or doing wrong.

But as per the jury, the verdict definitely went against them, granting the young girl victory. Both companies were found guilty of causing harm and delivering addictive features for young kids, as per the New York Times.

Jurors also found a huge fault with how social media apps were created and operated on a daily basis.

Meta and YouTube need to pay out $3 million in compensatory damages, with Meta responsible for 70% of that total cost.
