A ferry worker from Australia has been fired after taking a shocking 114 sick days within a 12-month period.
The workplace tribunal has ruled that the dismissal was lawful. The employee in question is Jodie Daunis, who was hired as a customer service operator on Brisbane's CityCat ferries for many years before being terminated by transport firm Kelsian Group in July last year.
{img}Daunis' frequent absences were related to some serious health concerns, and she suffered from DVT and recurring blood clots. This gave rise to ongoing pain and inflammation. Her condition got worse in 2024, and she was soon hospitalized in April of 2025.
Doctors shared recommendations about how she should stay off work for a few months and also referred her for surgery. But this procedure was delayed after her insurance provider refused to cover it, placing her on a public hospital waitlist.
{img}Despite her attempt to get back to work for a brief period of time, Daunis struggled to perform her regular duties as the pain was intense.
Her union argued that the report suggested she could get back to work after surgery, but the firm felt it showed clearly that she was not fit for the job.
