# Top House Republican Calls for Ilhan Omar to Be Jailed and Deported if Citizenship Fraud Is Proven

A top Republican leader in the U.S. House of Representatives is calling for Rep. Ilhan Omar to face jail time and deportation if investigators prove that she or her father lied on immigration paperwork to obtain her U.S. citizenship.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, a Republican from Minnesota, made the remarks. Emmer said Omar should face consequences if the allegations are confirmed, including potentially serving time in prison and being removed from the United States.

Omar, a Democratic representative from Minnesota, is under federal investigation over questions surrounding her immigration paperwork and the year of birth listed on documents. Investigators are examining allegations that the information may have affected the process through which she obtained citizenship after her family arrived from Somalia in the late 1990s.

Federal agents searched Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence earlier in the week as part of the investigation. Reports said agents seized her cellphone and other items, while investigators also issued subpoenas to relatives. The investigation remains ongoing, and no finding of citizenship fraud has been publicly established.

Omar has denied wrongdoing and described the investigation as a politically motivated attempt to target her. Other Democrats have also criticized the search, raising concerns about the use of federal law enforcement against a political opponent.

Emmer argued that the investigation should be allowed to proceed and that any consequences should depend on what investigators establish. His comments have added to the political dispute surrounding the congresswoman and the federal probe.

For now, the allegations remain unproven. Whether they lead to charges or other legal action will depend on the investigation’s findings and any subsequent decisions by authorities.
