# More Than 1,800 Arrested as Protester Violence Erupts and Demonstrations Turn Chaotic

More than 1,800 people have been arrested after nationwide protests against rising living costs and deteriorating public services escalated into violent clashes, fires and looting. The demonstrations drew hundreds of thousands of people, but scenes of destruction overshadowed many of the rallies.

The unrest unfolded on Saturday, October 17, across France, where demonstrators called for action over high prices, inequality and worsening conditions in schools. While many people marched peacefully, groups of masked individuals clashed with police, damaged businesses and set fires to public property.

One of the most dramatic incidents occurred in Limoges, where a fire engulfed the city’s historic town hall. The building’s roof collapsed, and local officials said the blaze caused extensive damage. Shops and other public buildings were also targeted in several cities.

Paris recorded 855 arrests, according to authorities, while the total across the country reached approximately 1,800. More than 500 police officers and emergency personnel were reported injured during the unrest. One demonstrator also reportedly died after suffering a cardiac arrest during protests in Paris.

The demonstrations brought together students, labor unions and people frustrated by the cost of living and declining public services. However, authorities condemned the violence and said investigations were underway to identify those responsible for attacks and looting.

President Emmanuel Macron was expected to meet with senior government officials and address the nation as the country assessed the damage. Business owners and local leaders called for support following the destruction.

The protests have intensified pressure on the French government as public frustration over prices, public spending and education continues. Authorities are investigating the violence, while the consequences of the widespread damage are still being assessed.
