# Former Homicide Detective Identified as Killer in 65-Year-Old Murder of 8-Year-Old Girl

A murder case that remained unsolved for more than 65 years has finally been resolved, with investigators identifying a former homicide detective as the man responsible for the killing of an 8-year-old girl.

Gloria Kowalewicz disappeared on November 12, 1960, while walking from her home to a nearby church to receive communion. Her body was later discovered in a ravine, several miles away. She had been shot twice, and the brutal crime triggered an extensive search for whoever was responsible.

Despite years of investigation, authorities were unable to identify the killer. The case remained open for decades, leaving Gloria’s family without answers about what had happened to the young girl.

The breakthrough came through advances in DNA technology. Investigators used genetic information connected to a genealogy website to develop a lead, with the FBI helping link the evidence to Thomas Francis McInerney, a former Chicago police officer who was 24 years old when Gloria was killed.

Additional forensic work, including DNA testing, fingerprint comparisons and ballistics evidence, supported investigators’ conclusion that McInerney was responsible for the murder, according to reports.

The discovery was particularly troubling because McInerney later served as a homicide detective, working in the same profession tasked with investigating crimes and protecting the public. He spent 28 years on the Chicago police force before later working as a federal investigator.

McInerney died in 2006, nearly two decades before investigators identified him in the case. As a result, he will never face a criminal trial for Gloria’s murder.

Chicago police officials described the revelation as deeply disturbing, while emphasizing the determination of investigators who continued pursuing answers decades after the crime.

For Gloria’s family, the breakthrough finally provided an answer to a question that had remained unresolved for generations, although the man identified as responsible died long before the case was solved.
