Mike Ditka's Cause of Death Revealed After NFL Legend's Passing at 86

Mike Ditka, the legendary NFL player and coach who led the Chicago Bears to a Super Bowl championship, has died at 86. While his death initially left questions about what happened in his final days, his longtime agent has now shared more information.

Steve Mandell, Ditka's agent and business partner, told USA TODAY Sports that the Hall of Famer died of natural causes. Ditka's family announced his passing on October 9, remembering him as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend.

The news comes after years of serious health challenges for the football icon. Ditka suffered a heart attack during the 1988 NFL season while coaching the Bears. He experienced a stroke in 2012 and endured another heart attack in 2018, which required doctors to implant a pacemaker.

Despite those setbacks, Ditka remained one of football's most recognizable personalities. Known to fans as "Da Coach" and "Iron Mike," he built a remarkable career both on the field and on the sidelines.

As a player, Ditka became the first tight end inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. As head coach of the Bears, he guided the team to a dominant Super Bowl XX victory following the 1985 season, cementing his place in NFL history.

Mandell said he had spoken with Ditka shortly before learning of his death, describing him as a larger-than-life figure who had endured injuries throughout his football career.

Although the agent attributed Ditka's death to natural causes, officials had not independently confirmed an official medical cause in the initial reporting.

His passing marks the end of an era for generations of football fans who watched him transform from a tough, hard-nosed player into one of the NFL's most memorable coaches.
