An 18-year-old college student was found dead in his dorm room, leaving his university community grieving as officials work to determine what happened.
Amir Eftekhar, an 18-year-old sophomore majoring in mathematics, was found dead on campus on Sunday afternoon, according to the Orange County Coroner’s Office. Student residents at his dorm were notified of the death by the university that evening.

Very few details about the circumstances of Eftekhar’s death have been released. Authorities have not publicly announced a cause of death, and the investigation remains ongoing. The university has asked students to respect the privacy of Eftekhar’s family as officials continue looking into the case.

The death came during a period of unusually high temperatures, which led to speculation online that the heat may have been involved. However, a university spokesperson specifically said that information claiming the death was heat-related was incorrect. Officials also said there were no indications of suspicious activity connected to the student’s death.

The university has made support resources available to students and encouraged members of the campus community to look out for one another while the investigation continues.
Eftekhar was found at the university’s Mesa Court housing community in Irvine, California.
