Elis and her twin sister, Eloá, were diagnosed as babies with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that causes accelerated aging in children. The first signs appeared when the girls were around 4 months old, including hair loss and changes to their skin. Their story later gained widespread attention as their family shared their everyday lives online.

Millions of people followed the twins as they grew up, watching them learn, play, dance, swim and attend therapy. Their social media accounts also became a way for the family to raise awareness about rare diseases and the challenges faced by children living with them. Elis had more than 1.5 million Instagram followers and 2.6 million TikTok followers, according to CNN Brasil.

Elis died on Sept. 30 at the age of 5. Her older brother, Guilherme Lago, announced the heartbreaking news and described her as a strong child who had fought through many challenges and lived surrounded by love. Initial reports said the family had not disclosed the cause of death, while a later report from Folha de S.Paulo said the family attributed her death to a generalized lung infection.
