# Christa Pike Survives 2 Lethal Injections as Officials Fail to Execute Her

Christa Pike survived two lethal injections during a botched execution attempt, leaving officials facing an extraordinary situation after the procedure failed to end her life.

Pike, 50, was scheduled to be executed in Tennessee after spending more than three decades on death row for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer, a fellow student at a vocational school.

The execution began Wednesday night after the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the state to proceed. Pike was strapped into the execution chamber and given lethal doses of pentobarbital.

But the procedure did not go as expected.

According to her attorneys and witnesses, Pike remained alive after two injections. Witnesses reported that she continued breathing and appeared to be snoring more than 40 minutes after the second dose. The execution was ultimately stopped rather than completed.

Pike was then transported from the prison to an off-site medical facility. Her attorneys said she was alive and receiving treatment, although details about her medical condition were initially limited.

The failed execution has prompted questions about what went wrong during the procedure. Pike's lawyers have said execution staff made repeated attempts to establish intravenous access before administering the drugs. A later account from her legal team said Pike even tried to help staff find a suitable vein during the process.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee ordered an independent review of the attempted execution following the incident. The state has also paused its remaining scheduled executions for 2026 while the circumstances are examined.

Pike remains under medical care as legal proceedings continue. Her case has now drawn renewed attention because of the unprecedented failure of the lethal-injection procedure.
