Officer Bryce Epperson of the Grosse Pointe Farms Public Safety Department responded to the scene after the worker was seriously injured. The man had suffered a major injury to his arm and was losing a dangerous amount of blood.

Epperson, who had only recently begun his career in law enforcement, quickly assessed the situation and decided to take the injured worker to the hospital himself rather than wait for the normal transportation process to play out.

The officer later explained that he made the decision because of the severity of the worker’s condition. He recognized that getting the man to medical care as quickly as possible was the priority.

The worker was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. His condition and recovery were not immediately detailed in the report.

Epperson said the incident was a reminder that police officers can find themselves responding to situations far outside their normal duties. At just 19, he was among the youngest officers in the department, but he relied on his training and judgment when faced with the emergency.

The incident has since drawn attention to the young officer’s response and the importance of making quick decisions when someone is seriously injured.

Officials have not suggested that the worker’s injury was caused by any criminal act. The incident was treated as a workplace accident, with the focus on getting the injured sanitation worker immediate medical attention.
