# Christa Pike Reveals New Health Fears After Returning to Prison Following Failed Execution

Christa Pike is raising new concerns about her health and safety after returning to prison following a failed execution attempt in Tennessee.

The 50-year-old death row inmate says she has been back to the hospital emergency room once since being discharged on October 9. She was not admitted for further inpatient care.

In a personal declaration filed in support of an emergency court motion, Pike described the difficulties she says she has faced while recovering behind bars. Among her concerns is having to clean what she called a “roach-infested shower,” which she fears could expose her to infection and further injury.

Pike survived two doses of the lethal injection drug pentobarbital during an execution attempt on September 30. She was hospitalized afterward and spent time on a ventilator before being discharged.

She says she continues to experience pain and physical weakness and is worried she would be unable to protect herself if returned to her former prison housing unit. According to her declaration, she witnessed assaults involving inmates and prison guards there.

Pike is asking the court to end her isolation in the prison infirmary and allow her to take part in group meals, classes, religious services, work assignments and recreation, while still addressing her medical needs and safety.

Her attorneys say the continued isolation is causing further harm and have asked the court to intervene.

The state was given until November 4 to respond to the emergency motion, with Pike's legal team allowed to reply by November 6.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. Tennessee has paused executions following Pike's failed execution attempt.
