# At Least 16 Dead After Powerful Earthquake Destroys Homes and Triggers Rescue Efforts

At least 16 people have died after a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck a remote, mountainous region late at night, collapsing hundreds of homes and leaving dozens of people injured.

The earthquake struck at approximately 10:30 p.m. local time on Thursday, October 22, according to reports citing local officials. The powerful shaking caused widespread structural damage, with at least 339 homes and 20 livestock buildings reported collapsed.

Emergency crews were deployed to search damaged buildings and assist people trapped or injured in the disaster. Officials mobilized rescue personnel and delivered emergency supplies, including tents, temporary housing units, folding beds and winter clothing, to help affected residents.

Dozens of people were reported injured, with some requiring urgent medical treatment. Authorities also warned of the danger posed by aftershocks, which could cause additional damage to already weakened buildings.

The earthquake disrupted communications in some areas and triggered rockfalls that forced officials to restrict traffic on a nearby highway. Only emergency and support vehicles were permitted through affected sections while crews worked to clear debris.

The high-altitude terrain and cold weather added further challenges for rescue workers. Emergency teams continued searching through damaged structures as officials coordinated medical assistance and temporary shelter for displaced residents.

The disaster has left many families facing the loss of loved ones and the destruction of their homes. Authorities continued assessing the damage and organizing relief efforts as rescue operations progressed.

The earthquake was described by local media as the strongest to strike the region in five years, underscoring the scale of the emergency and the difficult conditions facing those working to help survivors.
