The violence unfolded close to the university's Bragg Memorial Stadium, where homecoming activities had drawn crowds for the football game and related celebrations. The incident raised urgent concerns about how a confrontation could escalate so quickly and put children and other bystanders in danger.

Investigators were working to establish exactly what led to the shooting. As of the latest reports, no arrests had been announced, and officials had not publicly confirmed a motive.

The university said the shooting occurred nearby and emphasized that the incident was not on campus itself.

For the victims and their families, what should have been a memorable homecoming weekend instead became a night marked by fear, injuries and unanswered questions.
