Money-saving expert Martin Lewis has revealed that he recently came close to falling victim to a scam, despite spending years educating the public about fraud and financial deception.

The consumer advocate shared the experience to remind people that scams can affect anyone, regardless of their knowledge or experience. According to Lewis, he received a call from someone claiming to represent Amazon while he was busy working and moving between recording sessions.

The caller allegedly informed him that suspicious activity had been detected on his Amazon account and asked whether he had ordered a new iPhone. When Lewis said he had not, the caller claimed to have sent a six-digit verification code and instructed him to read it back.
At first, the situation appeared convincing, particularly because Lewis was distracted and under time pressure. However, he said warning signs eventually began to emerge, prompting him to question the legitimacy of the call before sharing any sensitive information.

Following the incident, Lewis emphasized that scammers often rely on urgency, pressure, and distraction to manipulate their targets. By creating a sense of panic, fraudsters hope people will act quickly without taking time to verify what is happening.

Lewis has long campaigned against online scams, phishing attempts, impersonation fraud, and other forms of financial crime. His latest experience serves as a reminder that even individuals who regularly educate others about scams can find themselves in vulnerable situations.
He encouraged people to remain cautious, verify unexpected requests independently, and never share security codes or personal information without first confirming who they are dealing with.
